Connecting laptop to tv hdmi windows 8

I've been trying tirelessly to get this to work for weeks now but I always come up with nothing. The video display works perfectly, however playing sound is not possible.

I recently purchased a new toshiba laptop with windows 8 and am trying to play media off of my TV from the laptop via HDMI cable.
